Chester Stiles Case Goes to the Jury

Updated:

The Chester Stiles molestation case is now going to jurors. Both sides rested their cases late Monday afternoon without Stiles ever taking the stand.

The state put on 17 witnesses during this case, and while the defense did have three people on its witness list, it did not call a single one.

The state went first in closing arguments. Deputy District Attorney James Sweetin told jurors that the evidence in the case is clear and that they should render a guilty verdict.

Earlier, attorneys for Stiles spent most of the day cross-examining the lead FBI Agent on the case. Deputy Public Defender Stacey Roundtree tried to show that law enforcement made some mistakes along the way.

"Did you, in fact, look at the DVD's to see if they contained relevant content -- meaning had they been written on?" she asked.

"Apparently not," said Agent Andrew Gruninger.

Gruninger says he found a DVD copy of the videotape in a Pahrump storage locker that had been rented on behalf of Chester Stiles. But he says he did not recognize that the DVD contained the recording for about a year.

Gruninger says he did try to see if any of Stiles' acquaintances had ever seen the DVD, "After I determined that the DVD had that footage on it, I talked to a couple of people known to Mr. Stiles, who I believed he had lived with at different points -- or at least was friendly with -- to see if they had seen DVD's that looked like that. They were aware of Mr. Stiles having those DVD's."

So after six full days, the jury will be getting this case shortly. Stiles could face multiple life sentences in prison if he is convicted.

The jury was sent home late Monday and will be back at 10 a.m. Tuesday to deliberate.
