Transgender Woman Accused in Waitress Slaying Found Guilty

Updated:

Raven Navajo, the transgender woman accused of killing a local cocktail waitress, driving around with her body -- and then throwing it in a dumpster, was found guilty of second degree murder for the killing of Brenda Schmalfeldt.

The defense maintained Raven Navajo killed Schmaldfelt by accident, and it was not premeditated.

A co-worker and friend of Schmaldfelt's got up and left before the verdict was read completely. Outraged, the person yelled at Navajo saying, "I hope you get life in prison, you scumbag."

The jury foreperson was overcome with emotion when he read the verdict to the courtroom. Navajo, a transgender woman, showed little emotion.

Her victim's family was in disbelief. "I was disgusted to show leniency to somebody who has such little value for human life to literally throw it away, it's ridiculous," said Thomas Dean, the victim's brother.

Sentencing is scheduled for April 9.
