We're waiting for police to identify the valley man killed Wednesday in the San Diego neighborhood of La Jolla.
The 57-year-old was at Torrey Pines State Beach with his brother and nephew. He went to the edge of the cliff and rocks underneath him began slipping.
He appeared to have suffered severe head trauma and lifeguards and medics performed CPR on him.
"The huge part of the cliff collapsed and fell on him and so I have to say that every one of the rescuers were absolutely amazing. They never stopped working on him," said Ramona Cook, a witness.
The section of collapsed cliff -- about 30 feet wide -- was several hundred feet below the Torrey Pines Golf Course, which hosted the U.S. Open in June.
The beach and parts of the bluff surrounding the collapse were closed.
