Suspended District Court Judge Elizabeth Halverson is in the hospital, recovering from what police say was an attempt on her life. The man accused of trying to kill her is her husband Edward Halverson. He's behind bars after officers say he beat her with a frying pan.

Neighbors say the Halverson home has been a battleground for the couple before. Many say they've seen Judge Halverson yelling obscenities at her husband from their door, and they always feared things would become violent.

The neighborhood had a wake up call of police sirens and helicopters, all responding to the couple's home after Judge Halverson called 911, saying her husband was trying to kill her.

For neighbors, the sight was frightening. "I said, ‘Oh my God. Her head is bandaged.' It was all bandaged and then I knew what had happened," said neighbor Janice Busch.

The accusations of violence also had neighbors stunned. "He was good guy to her -- he really was a patient guy. I just don't see Ed doing that. I don't know how it happened," said neighbor Richard Isitt.

Many on the street say they rarely ever talked with the judge, but her husband Ed was a friend to many, and they worried he was being abused in the marriage.

"She was so mean to him. So mean," said Busch.

Isitt has known the Halverson's for three years and calls Ed a doting husband, "She was handicapped in the chair, and stuff like that. She couldn't get around so good, so he took care of her -- cooked for her, did everything for her."

However, many were surprised to hear this was not Ed Halverson's first time behind bars. He has been arrested 10 times in three different states on charges from drugs to theft. He also served four years in prison long before he married the judge in 1998.

His past did little to sway the feeling of neighbors for the man they call a saint. "I've heard that he has had problems in the past, but he was a very sweet man around the neighborhood," said Busch.

Police say Judge Halverson is still in the Intensive Care Unit at Sunrise Hospital. They say her condition is improving and she'll be moved to room sometime soon. Police have not been able to talk to the Judge because she has been so heavily sedated.

Ed Halverson is charged with battery with substantial bodily harm and attempted murder. He will stay at the Clark County Detention Center until Tuesday morning, when a judge will decide if he will be eligible for bail.
