Big Delays Coming to I-15

Updated:

Drivers who might be heading to California should get ready to sit and wait. Blasting operations will shutdown southbound I-15 two times in December and throughout next year.

The message California and Nevada officials want to stress is safety, and they plan on teaming up with Primm Valley Resorts to help.

Starting December 10, 2008, southbound lanes of I-15 will be shutdown so Caltrans can conduct blasting and rock removal along the interstate.

In previous blasting operations traffic backs up and people are out of their vehicles walking around. Now, by teaming up with Nevada Highway Patrol, they're hoping to alleviate this from happening again.

"We're working together with Nevada Highway Patrol and California Highway Patrol will exit southbound motorists to the Primm Valley Resort areas and the Primm Valley Resort areas will be able to accommodate those motorists while they wait out the closure period," said Rose Melgoza with Caltrans.

Every Wednesday starting on December 10, 2008, southbound I-15 will be shutdown at Mountain Pass from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. That means NHP will stop southbound traffic at Primm and have drivers exit there until the road has been reopened.

All agencies involved want to remind drivers to pack their patience. They picked Wednesday because it's the slowest travel day of the week. However, the Wednesday closures will not be in affect during the holiday season.

So that's December 10, and 17, 2008 and then closures will resume in January, 2009.
