Acts of Kindness: Angie McGee

LAS VEGAS -

You never know whose life you may touch and change for the better, even late in life.

Especially true for our Acts of Kindness recipient who works in one of the toughest units in the hospital.

Kelly Johnson met Angie McGee last summer inside UMC's Burn Care Center, where Angie began caring for Kelly's 93-year-old father.

Kelly Johnson says, "He fell on asphalt and couldn't get up, he was on the asphalt for 30 minutes, it was the hottest day of the summer."

Her father, Harry O'Quinn suffered second and third degree burns over 25 percent of his body.

Angie McGee says," We knew he was terminally ill and there wasn't much we could do."

Angie did what she does best, providing top-notch care and comfort. While Harry would yell at other nurses and complain, with Angie.. it was the opposite.

Johnson adds, " He loved her and he would sing to her, and the thing that made me the happiest, and the thing that really touched my heart was when he was singing to her, and Angie had a tear coming down her face, I was in shock and then she went over and kissed his cheek.  I was thinking, if somebody told me this happened, I wouldn't have believed it, unless I saw it."

An unexpected outcome because Kelly says her father was a racist and at age 93 she never thought he would change, but with Angie, during the last two months of his life, everything changed.

Hospital Spokesperson Danita Cohen says, "The irony of this story, is here's a 93 year old man who his family admits was racist his entire life, and here comes Angie who defeated in his mind, every stereotype and every bit of racism he had in his body. She was the one, ironically who was the angel at the end of his life."
