Acts of Kindness: Teacher Mark Edmonson

LAS VEGAS - Special education teachers are in high demand in the Clark County School District.

One such teacher fulfilled a huge need at Becker Middle School. The staff and parents say he's the greatest addition to their children's lives.

Mark Edmonson credits success in his class to operating like a family. He says these kids are diverse learners so he incorporates a lot of creativity with his teaching, "These kids are wonderful, they all have so many gifts and they have needs. Many of them have a great many needs."

He went through the alternative route to licensure program, and during his first year of teaching started the "Kids Program" at Richard Bryan Elementary. He adds, "That's autism for three, four, and five-year-olds. I walked into an empty room and we built the program up from there, it was an incredible experience."

Then came the opportunity at Becker Middle School. After having multiple long-term substitutes, Principle  Amy Smith says Mr. Edmonson was the perfect fit. "We found a wonderful, patient, kind man, and he does a wonderful job with our autistic students."

Of course Mr. Edmonson credits his wonderful assistants, "This doesn't work as well if you don't have the support or talents of the people I'm surrounded with."
