The construction will involve three phases:  trenching roads, underground cabling and transmission-pole removal.  The project is expected to take approximately 16-18 months to complete, and will employ approximately 30 to 50 local construction workers and contractors.  Updates on construction status are available online at www.flamingopowerlines.com.

Tropicana Utility Work

March 16, contractors hired by the Clark County Department of Aviation began work on an approximately 6-month project to install new underground utility lines to power McCarran International Airport. These lines are being installed beneath a 1.6-mile stretch of Tropicana Avenue that begins east of Interstate 15 (behind the New York-New York hotel-casino) and ends near the intersection of Tropicana and Paradise Road.

Beginning late Sunday or very early Monday, workers will begin digging beneath the intersection of Tropicana and Las Vegas Boulevard. Work will occur around the clock in order to finish this phase as quickly as possible, but through May 28 traffic in the aforementioned intersection will be significantly impacted by this road work. Traffic in each direction along Tropicana, as well as both directions of Las Vegas Boulevard, will be limited to two through lanes and one dedicated turn lane until this phase of the road work is completed.

Drivers are urged to seek an alternate route, if possible.

It's also worth noting that a second crew has begun working on Tropicana east of Koval, doubling the amount of workers involved in this utility project, which is scheduled to conclude in late September. (To date the work pace is on schedule.)

The utility lines are directly related to the ongoing development of McCarran's Terminal 3, which is scheduled to open in mid-2012. After considering several alternatives, the airport was directed to build a new permanent connection linking McCarran with a new NV Energy substation located west of the Strip along Frank Sinatra Drive. The airport is now powered by other substations that no longer have additional capacity to service McCarran's future needs.

LAS VEGAS - The Clark County Department of Aviation is installing new underground utility lines beneath Tropicana Avenue that will increase connectivity between McCarran International and the nearby NV Energy substations that bring power to the nation's seventh-busiest airport.

These necessary infrastructure improvements will require traffic control measures that could cause delays in the area beginning Monday, March 16 and continuing through September. Sites to be affected are located within a 1.6-mile stretch of Tropicana that begins east of Interstate 15 (behind the New York-New York hotel-casino) and ends near the intersection of Tropicana and Paradise Road.

Eastbound and westbound lane restrictions and other traffic control measures will be implemented at various points as work progresses near Tropicana's center median. A traffic plan approved by the Nevada Department of Transportation requires that at least two lanes remain open in each direction throughout the duration of the project.

Strip & Downtown Closures

Las Vegas Blvd. East Harmon- City Center Pedestrian Bridge

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Authorities are expecting four days of overnight and morning traffic delays on the Las Vegas Strip as officials build a pedestrian bridge near City Center. MGM Mirage officials say the bridge will cross Las Vegas Boulevard at East Harmon Avenue, outside the $8.7 billion casino development expected to open in stages starting later this year. Officials for the casino company say the delays will run from about midnight to 10 each morning from Monday through Thursday. MGM Mirage officials say that eventually, pedestrian bridges will connect City Center to the Cosmopolitan hotel, and the Cosmopolitan to Planet Hollywood.

Martin L. King Project

Martin L. King is being widened to three northbound and three southbound traffic lanes. The project also includes extensive utility relocation and the installation of curb, gutter, sidewalk and sidewalk ramps, storm drainage facilities, landscaped median islands and street lighting. The traffic signals at Bonanza Road, Washington Avenue, Vegas Drive, Lake Mead Boulevard and Carey Avenue will also be upgraded as part of the improvements that are slated for completion in the first quarter of 2010. Motorists are advised to proceed with caution as they become familiar with the new signalized intersection.

St. Rose Parkway & Road Work

The City is repaving and re-profiling Serene between Eastern and St. Rose Parkway. NDOT is currently widening the portion south of the 215 to Pecos road. Construction is expected to be completed by August. Expect shifts in traffic lanes during this project.

The County's project along Eastern between Flamingo Road to Serene Avenue is the installation of fiber optics.  This project is slated to be finished by mid-summer. Repaving of Eastern between Wigwam and the 215 is slated to star later this spring.
