Friends grieve at a vigil on Saturday.LAS VEGAS, Nv -- It was a somber day for Del Sol High School as students returned to the campus for the first time since learning of a classmate's death.
Sixteen-year-old Corey Knight was killed Friday afternoon when his SUV slammed into a wall injuring his two passengers.
A memorial has grown at the scene of the crash on Gateway Rd., near Russell Rd. and Mountain Vista. Candles, poems and even Corey's skateboard helmet are reminders of the teen.
His cousin Travis Metcalf is still in disbelief. "He was my little brother. The one who I looked after. He is my cousin, but I was more like a brother," he said.
Grief counselors were on hand Monday a the high school to help students cope. Many say they are still in disbelief their friend and classmate is gone.
"A lot of people are wearing remembrance shirts. People are crying, it's just a depressing day over at Del Sol," said Nathaniel Clayton, a friend of Knight's. He says when he learned of the crash and Corey's death, he was shocked it was someone he knew. According to Clayton, the counselors office at Del Sol was filled throughout the day with students seeking help.
Police say a combination of speed and inexperience at handling the vehicle was the cause of the crash. "What I would ask young drivers to do is never drive outside of their experience level, their ability, and obviously the vehicle's capabilities," said Metro Sgt. Oscar Chavez. He says the students will remember this event for the rest of their lives.
