Las Vegas tennis ace Andre Agassi hasn't kept quite about his past in his new book titled Open, An Autobiography.
It's an autobiography that sheds light on his drug use and his failed marriage to Brook Shields. The book was released Monday.
Agassi wants his book to serve as tool for people who find themselves in a life they are not happy about. He was very candid about his drug abuse and his take on whether or not his image as a role model to thousands everywhere, including kids, will be tainted by him admitting to this. “Role models teach you what to do in life and what not do in life. So I have no pretense. I have way more to lose in this book than I have to gain, but my goal is to teach what to do and what not do as it relates to experiences I have lived,” he said.
Agassi has been making the rounds on TV and radio for the release of the book. Monday morning he was on KNPR before sitting down with Channel 8.
The 400-page book has been in the works for the last three years. We asked how he would explain his past to his kids and all that has been focused on, aside from his winnings as one of the greatest in the sports of tennis. “I explain to them everyday how daddy makes mistakes. That's a message that's clear and there's a lot of teachable moments with them,” he said.
Agassi also talked about harsh comments made towards him after learning about his meth use. He says he understands why there is anger and disappointment.
The last few days have been nonstop for him promoting his book and having to answer questions following what's in the book. He plans to keep moving forward with his school and fundraising events to keep Andre Agassi Prep thriving.
While he's had little rest, he is excited about this release and signing in his hometown.
The signing happens tonight at 7 p.m. at the Encore Theater at Wynn. A ticket is needed to attend. They’re free and are available at any Borders Books in Las Vegas.
The second signing is Nov. 22, 2009 at the Costco on Pavilion Center Drive in Summerlin.
