Las Vegas NowTightened Economy Could Have Kids Skimping on Mother's Day
Flower shops feel the pinch of the economy this Mother's Day weekend.
With gas in record territory and the price of everything else going up, a lot of people are trying to drive less and spend less -- and this weekend, it may be Mom who gets a bit shortchanged.
It's one of those days where price shouldn't be an object -- Mother's Day.
"The bells and whistles are kind of gone this year," said Eugene Godina, of Tiger Lily Flower Shop.
Inside Tiger Lily Flower Shop, Eugene Godina is seeing high prices -- everywhere. "We have a fuel bill that's 35-percent higher," he said.
The slowing economy has dealt Godina and driver Wendell Wells a double blow.
"There were very few limits last year. This year everyone's being very conscious," said Godina.
As the economy struggles, people just aren't willing to pony up -- even for Mom. And now delivery costs are jumping too.
"To fill up a van is around $80," said Godina.
Some buyers, like Cesar Quintana just don't buy into the bad economy blues.
Business is cooling off though, forcing Godina and company to trim everywhere they can. "We're being much more efficient in our routing and our delivery system, so that we're getting the optimum use out of the vehicles," said Godina.
Just the price of picking and choosing -- on the day where price has no object.
