Metro Cracking Down on School Zone Violations

Updated:

What should be a simple walk to school is not always a safe one for your most prized possession, just ask Jennifer Cruz who walks her three little ones to school. She's already had a close call with a driver who didn't follow the rules.

"There's cars going 35 to 45 miles per hour down the street. They don't bother to slow down. Once I had to yank my son by the shirt because he almost got hit by a car that was zooming by, so that's pretty scary," she said.

Metro Police Officers aren't waiting until the start of the school year to put their foot down. They are already out enforcing school zone traffic violations -- double parking and speeding are two major problems.

"It doesn't matter if the school is in or not, if those lights are flashing, it means slow down," said Officer Dave Corbin.

And though you are responsible for what goes on behind the wheel, officers urge parents to teach their kids how to properly cross the street.

"I just wait until the stop person holds up the stop sign," said Capone Cruz.

And though Jennifer always walks with them, knowing her kids know the right thing to do when she's not around provides some peace of mind.

Metro Officers were out enforcing Tuesday at one local elementary school. In just one hour, they issued six tickets. Many of those drivers will have to now pay a $380 fine.
