North Las Vegas police say a 4-month-old baby girl was mauled to death by the family's pit bulls. It happened at the family's home. Police said this was a freak accident.
Neighbors say the baby was being watched by her grandmother -- while her parents were at work. It's not known at this time why the dogs attacked her.
Police say they got the call around 11:30 a.m. and came out to Eagle View. At that time, they were forced to put the dogs down because the animals were vicious.
Neighbors also say the grandmother suffered some minor injuries. Eyewitness News cameras did see someone being taken away on a stretcher.
Oscar Lewis lives across the street. He says he has several dogs around the house, and he also has four kids. Lewis says you have to be extra careful with the combination. "They become territorial. They are part of the family and somebody tries to invade their territory, they are going to try and protect it."
Many neighbors we talked to didn't know the family. Lewis said he saw the pit bulls out once or twice but avoided contact with them.
Police are talking with the family to try and understand what went wrong. But they do say they do not expect any charges to be filed.
