15 arrest warrants issued as state wades through backlogged rape kits

LAS VEGAS - A new report released Tuesday details how far along the state of Nevada has come in wading through the backlog of rape kits.

According to the state attorney general's office, 15 arrest warrants have been issued thanks to evidence obtained in rape kit testing. Eight of those arrests were made in southern Nevada.

There are still thousands of kits that need to be tested, but Metro Police's forensic lab hope to send off the remaining 1,700 sexual assault kits for testing by the end of April 2019.

Millions of dollars have been set aside to open laboratories and hire workers to go through the kits, which backlogged due to a lack of funding.
