23,000-plus take steps to get Nevada driver cards

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) -- The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles says almost 49,000 Nevada residents have taken the written test since January to obtain a driver authorization card, and almost 16,400 people received cards as of June 11.

DMV spokesmen said Monday that just under 6,700 people were given authorization card permit instruction permits.

The cards are available to international immigrants who aren't eligible for a regular driver's license, and to people transferring driver privilege cards from other states.

Some state officials think as many as 60,000 people could be eligible to apply for the Nevada cards. The state has more than 2.75 million residents.

Officials say there's no way to know if people who now have driver authorization cards had insurance before or after obtaining them.
