42 teachers hired for CCSD in Feb., hundreds of spots left to fill

LAS VEGAS - Nevada is still dealing with a state-wide teacher shortage.  In Clark County alone, the school district needs to fill about 700 teaching spots.

Governor Sandoval's office signed an emergency regulation to help with the shortage.  A representative of CCSD said it's too early to gauge how successful the governor's provisional licensure program has been thus far, but Michael Gentry, Interim Human Resources Chief for CCSD, did tell 8 News NOW that compared to last February, his team has hired double the amount of teachers.

"We are starting to see the tracking, and I think a certain percentage, maybe the bulk of it is thanks to the provisional licensing," said Gentry.

Dominque De Biasio is from Columbus, Ohio, and this is her first year teaching in Las Vegas at Hal Smith Elementary.

"When I came in, I knew we were a high need region.  We are the fifth-largest school district in the nation, we have to fill those classrooms," De Biasio said.  "Everybody I talk too, I am like, 'hey you need a job?' We have plenty of them."

In 2015, the Clark County School District lost about 1,600 teachers.  That's one of the reasons, the governor's office gave school districts the ability to offer provisional teaching licenses.

"We really need good teachers, and we need people, who are going to stay," De Biasio said.  "We have to start caring about the next generation because they are the ones who are going to shape Las Vegas, and they are going to the rest of the country."

"Last year at this time, we hired 22 people. Today -- so far this month, we have hired 42 people," according to Gentry.

In addition to the governor's emergency licensure program, school district officials are using unique ways, such as social media, and recruiting out of state to attract teachers.

A recruiting trip has been scheduled for Detroit, Michigan in three weeks.
