60 County Workers to be Laid Off Friday

LAS VEGAS -- You can walk down the Las Vegas Strip and see construction has been one of the hardest hit industries in the recession. But those stalled projects are now costing some Clark County workers their jobs.

Clark County Development Services is in charge of new construction, permits and inspections. But with most projects on hold, there is not as much for them to do. Sixty people are being handed pink slips Friday.

Development Services used to be one of the county's busiest offices. There were 600 employees in 2006. Friday. they will be down to 170.

Only 5,000 new homes were built and sold last year, compared to 20,000 in a normal year. That decline means less demand for development services.

Clark County has 1,100 job vacancies, but they are not filling most of them.
