7/16/14 Jaime & Hector Try for a Baby

Fertility treatments are expensive, and there is no guarantee of a pregnancy.   Most couples forge ahead to cover the cost somehow, and one local couple is turning to crowdfunding for help.   Dave Courvoisier explains.

"I would take pregnancy tests and you know nothing, it would be negative," says Jaime.

Adoption is a real possibility in the future for Jaime and Hector.   Married now, six years, they've  been hoping for children.   Both have brothers and sisters with their own kids, and family is important. But Jaime has risk factors making a pregnancy unlikely.

"And so I mean we kept trying and then we finally decided about a year or so ago that maybe there should be another route that we should go," adds Jaime.

But they still have a chance for their own natural child.   Doing that will take money, a little luck, and the help of Jaime's sister, who has offered to be the surrogate mother.

"She said are you sure? She questioned me you sure about it's a big deal I said of course I'll be there for you I know what it's like having kids and I want her to feel that. I want her to know what it's like to have a little Jaime or Hector running around," says Amy, Jaime's older sister.

Now, they're moving ahead with in vitro fertilization, but costs are high.

"But it's close to $30,000 for like blood work, lawyers, we have to have like contracts, and things like that," admits Jaime.

That's when their mom got busy on the internet.

"They're trying so hard to raise the money and had I had the money I would've given him everything I had but..." says Maureen Jaime and Amy's mother.

Maureen discovered the go-fund-me site to provide crowd funding help for social causes.

"And then I heard about these fundraisers going on go fund me and so I said let's try it and just trying to get it out there," adds Maureen.

"I mean it's something that we've wanted so bad so I feel like if you wanted that bad enough, figure it out just work your hardest to get to it," says Jaime.
