8 on Your Side Issues Warning for Windows XP Users

LAS VEGAS - A big change is coming for a computer operating system used by approximately 30 percent of the world's population. The change could put you at a higher risk for cyber attacks.

Starting April 8, Microsoft will no longer support its Windows XP operating system, which will make thousands of people vulnerable to cyber threats.

After April 8, Microsoft will stop providing technical assistance or security updates for Windows XP. That means your computer likely won't be able to run newer programs. You will soon be vulnerable to viruses and malware.

You can take steps to protect yourself. You can upgrade your operating system, which will cost money. You can still continue to use Windows XP, but know the risks involved. Computer experts say you're six times more likely to be hacked.

The changes may not end with Windows XP. Microsoft representatives say all of the company's operating systems are designed with an end date. They call it a "lifecycle". So, the Vista operating system may eventually go through a similar change.
