8 on Your Side: Jury Summons Scam Heads West

LAS VEGAS - What happens if you get a call saying you skipped jury duty and now you have to pay a fine? It's a scam that's gaining popularity in several federal court districts in New Mexico, Utah and Colorado and could eventually land in Nevada.

The caller claims to be a court employee. That caller demands you pay a $400 fine for skipping out on jury duty, even though you never received a summons.

The caller then demands you pay the fine with a Green Dot Money Pack Card. This is the point when you should hang up the phone. Scammers commonly use Green Dot Money Pack Cards to rip off consumers.

The cards look like credit cards, but they aren't. You put cash on them, similar to a gift card. If you load money on one and give the pin number to the caller, they'll take your money and leave you with nothing. You will not be able to retrieve your money once it's gone.

8 on Your Side spoke with federal and state court jury administrators. They report the scam hasn't hit Nevada yet, but it likely will. A similar scam hit our area a few years ago.
