8 on Your Side offers advice for cruise passengers

LAS VEGAS - The media have reported numerous cruise problems – ranging from illness to no electricity – in recent months.

Before you set sail, you should know about the Cruise Passenger Bill of Rights. The Cruise Lines International Association adopted the Bill of Rights.

If you book a cruise with one of the group's two dozen member businesses – such as Princess, Carnival or Royal Caribbean – you can take control of your experience.

For example, if there is a problem onboard that results in a shortage of food, water or access to bathrooms, you are allowed to disembark from a docked ship.

The Bill of Rights also mandates your right to emergency medical attention and timely updates on any changes to the ship's itinerary or mechanical status.

Cruise companies now assume responsibility for passengers' transportation and lodging when a mechanical problem cuts the trip short or cancels it. Passengers also have the right to a full or partial refund.

If you are planning a cruise, print out the Bill of Rights before you leave.
