LAS VEGAS - Consumer data agencies are groups that monitor information about you, including the bills you pay, the prescriptions you buy or your traffic violations. They are legal, but you can take steps to protect yourself.

Many people check credit reports at least a few times a year. Another report, however, might warrant extra attention.

It's called a consumer reporting agency report. These companies track your every move, and most people have never heard of them.

Consumer data companies track utility payment history, insurance claim records, lease violations, bounced checks and traffic violations.

Millions of people could have records with the agencies. They obtain their info from court files, banks and companies where people have accounts.

These agencies have power, because the information they collect could cost you. You could get turned down for bank accounts, jobs, insurance, housing, or cable television service.

According to federal law, you can request annual reports from these agencies to ensure everything is accurate. If you find a mistake, you can dispute it and get it off your record.
