8 on Your Side uncovers clever credit card scam

LAS VEGAS - If you received a call from a credit card company that claimed you were the target of fraud, you would probably believe it, but it may be a clever new scam to steal your identity.

Kyra Thibodeau is one of many southern Nevadans who says she received a suspicious phone call from a credit card company. Many say the robocalls come from out of state numbers and claim the customers' MasterCards are locked due to fraud.

When Thibodeau and her husband received the call, they were convinced it was legitimate, since she recently purchased a cruise.

Rather than giving information over the phone, however, she immediately hung up and called the number on the back of her MasterCard. The company told her the phone call was a scam.

Thibodeau says she noticed warning signs during the robocall.

"They didn't identify themselves. They didn't tell which credit card or which credit card company or which bank. So, there were a lot of red flags," she said.

Representatives with MasterCard say if your account is locked, or they suspect fraud on your account, they will call you, but it won't be a robocall. If Thibodeau continued with the call she received, it would have asked her to verify her name, account number and address. That would have given the scammers everything they needed to rip her off.

In legitimate credit card and bank calls, the caller will ask you about a specific charge and not ask for personal information over the phone.

They will also contact you in writing, so you know who you are dealing with. If you receive a call from someone claiming to represent your credit card company, and you are not sure it is legitimate, hang up the phone and call your credit card company directly, just like Thibodeau did.

Being proactive and overly cautious is your best defense.
