8/06/14 Helen is a Confident 13-yr-old

Today's Wednesday's Child is 13, but she's been in foster care since she was five.   The experience made her strong, but she still very much wants an adoptive family.   Dave Courvoisier introduces us to "Helen".

At Color-Me-Mine, Helen painted some pottery while she talked to us.   It didn't take me long to realize, Helen is very much her own person.   I asked her if she was as self-conscious as other foster teens about telling her story on tv.

"No I don't care what people have to say about me because what they say about me is not my business it's their problem, so… yeah," said Helen

She told us she's been in too many foster homes to count in the last eight years... And that there were things she had to get used to:

"It's hard to change schools like you know every month or say and like meeting new friends and have to start all over again, and it's really hard but you know I just am used to it so I just go through it.," admits Helen.

"If she believes something, she believes it till the end."

That's Helen's current foster father, Joe, who says Helen is always direct, but considerate and courteous.

"And her personality and the way she carries herself is tremendous. I mean it's you don't see a lot of kids sometimes who been… uh they… faced with hardship, that are ready to accept somebody else to come along and try and work with them, you know because it's up to part of the process," explains Joe.

Helen hopes to be a singer or an entertainer someday:

"Yeah I have a girl group I'm with right now that we just sing like as girls I mean like going in front of our friends and stuff and sing like that," adds Helen.

Whatever she chooses to do with her life, Helen will likely tackle it with determination.   Including adoption:

"Watch out. Because she's going to go after it.   It's not I'm not going to half step, I'm not just going to jog to get there on, that you like the bull going through the china closet, and that's it (smiles)," says Joe.

As you can see, Helen has her heart set on being adopted, and you can help make that happen, by taking the first step of calling the Adoption Exchange today at 436-6335.
