Acts of Kindness: Brad Parker

BOULDER CITY, Nev. - Brad Parker is being recognized in a big way. He celebrates his tenth year of weekly volunteering at the Nevada State Veterans Home in Boulder City.

"I try to bring a little joy on Wednesday nights," he said.

This retired U.S. Coast Guardsman and his wife live in Boulder City. He found the veterans home to be the best fit for him to stay active with the military.

"Most of these guys (are) World War Two or Korean vets," he said. "They're always called ‘the Greatest Generation,' and I totally agree with that, because they have given so much, given us what we have today in this country."

Wednesday activities have become quite the event. It's Pokeno time, and the Parkers are the big draw.

"They're wonderful. They're fun. I don't know whether we come for Pokeno or to see them," said veterans home resident Leila Heimller.

"He makes it a lot of fun, does his Elvis Presley impersonation," said activity coordinator Nancy Frazier.

What started with three participants a decade ago has grown to 20. Brad admits coming to the veterans home has been a motivation for him over the years.

"I went through a bout of cancer three years ago. I had colon cancer. I just knew that I'd come here, see people much worse off. They'd keep pushing on. It's a kind of two-way street. They keep me going. If I can bring a little joy to their lives, it makes things work both ways," he said.

8 News NOW is rewarding Brad Parker's efforts, awarding him $800 as part of its weekly series Acts of Kindness. If you wish to nominate someone for Acts of Kindness, visit our website or e-mail us.
