Acts of Kindness: Evelyn Manfield

LAS VEGAS - Evelyn Manfield will tell you that anybody who knits or crochets always has extra. So, she decided to put that extra yarn to good use.

She invited the local ladies at her senior mobile home park to join her inside the club house.

"I didn't even know the first week how many people would show. I just put a note in our monthly newsletter," she said.

Their mission was to create hats, gloves and scarves for the homeless, shawls and lap covers for elderly residents at local nursing homes and special clothing for premature babies at Valley Hospital.

She insisted her quilters follow one, simple rule. "We told ourselves from the get-go, it's stress-free. It's got to be fun," she said.

That was five years ago. Since then, the group unofficially became known as Evi's Quilters. They meet every Friday.

"Somehow, we seem to rack up enough to make a difference to some people," she said. "A family came out of a truck, searched through the bag and found the smallest little hats. The kids acted like they had been given one hundred dollars. They were so thrilled to have something warm on their heads."

8 News NOW is rewarding Evelyn Manfield for her efforts, awarding her $800 as part of its weekly series Acts of Kindness. If you wish to nominate someone for Acts of Kindness, visit our website or e-mail us.
