Acts of Kindness: Kim Amato

LAS VEGAS - Kim Amato calls it southern Nevada's biggest baby shower. She is the founder of Baby's Bounty, an effort to get every newborn in southern Nevada off to a good start.

Case workers with various social service providers pick up "baby bundles" and deliver them to new parents when they are still in the hospital.

"We're giving them a new car seat, a portable crib, an infant bath tub, a carrier for the parent to wear the baby, and a diaper bag filled with clothes, bottles, blankets, toiletries," Amato said.

In five years, she's helped provide supplies for approximately 2,500 babies.

When 8 News NOW caught up with her, she was collecting items outside of Arizona's Charlie's and, by the end of the day, filled a truck with baby supplies.

Her non-profit organization received a large check from Discount Tire and Auto. Delta Children Furniture donated 200 portable cribs. Others provided handmade blankets.

"Somebody took a lot of time to do this for us, and we like giving the mommies something they wouldn't normally have," Amato said.

The idea for Baby's Bounty came when the recession hit. Amato was an art consultant for many years before she had to re-invent herself when the economy tanked.

She started working with the Nevada Homeless Alliance and learned of the many challenges facing people, including some new parents who lacked homes and lived in their cars.

"When you don't have the most basic things for your baby, it's very hard to keep your spirits up," Amato said. "This gives them hope. Somebody cares."

8 News NOW is rewarding Kim Amato's efforts, awarding her $800 as part of its weekly series Acts of Kindness.
