Acts of Kindness: Rebeca Ferreira

LAS VEGAS - Rebeca Ferreira was a semester away from finishing law school in her home country of the Dominican Republic when she decided to come to the U.S. to pursue the American dream. In 1991, she married a man she thought she knew.

"One day I remember, my husband called me and he said, ‘You're immigration papers are here,'" she said. "When I went to the house, there were no immigration papers there. He raped me."

After years of mental and physical abuse, Rebeca left and made a new life in Las Vegas. She worked with the North Las Vegas Police Department as an advocate for victims of domestic violence. She realized she wanted to do more. In 2008, she started Safe Faith United, a non-profit that helps victims walk away from abusive relationships and start over.

"We're going to take the time, one victim at a time. We're going to take the time to develop these women. We're going to take the time to inspire them to go to college, take our time to educate them, fight for their rights," she said.

Rebeca used her entire savings and retirement to start the organization. She's dedicated countless volunteer hours and inspired others to join her cause. Ana Rodriguez, who was also a victim, turned to Rebeca for help. Ana's now a volunteer at Safe Faith United.

"I think it's extraordinary," Ana said. "You don't see a lot of people that go out of their way and spend their whole day in an office trying to help out someone that doesn't know where to start. It's good to know that someone's here to help, and she's doing it out of kindness - not for a paycheck."

8 News NOW decided it was time to show Rebeca some kindness - giving her $800 as part of its weekly series Acts of Kindness.

"I'm going to spend this money with my victims," Rebeca said.
