Acts of Kindness: Shelly McEvilly

LAS VEGAS - August 2 marks a big anniversary for Shelly McEvilly. It will be three years since she donated a kidney to her sister who suffers from lupus.

Kim Rakow is McEvilly's supervisor. Shelly is a nurse with the Clark County School District. Rakow says Shelly's positive approach means the world to her.

"Never once do I hear her say, ‘Oh, I'm so worried. Oh, I didn't know if I should do this.' There was none of that, none of that. It's just a given, and it's kind of the way Shelly is about everything," Rakow said.

McEvilly's students at Gilbert Magnet School for Creative Arts also appreciate her approach.

"When I came back at my elementary school (after the kidney donation), my first aid assistant had arranged for the entire school to wear green, which is the color for kidney donation," she said. "I just cried. It was really touching. I was just so shocked."

She assists students with special needs. She oversees 18 students who have had tracheotomies and four who are on ventilators. She goes above and beyond in her care and concern.

"I worry about my students a lot. I worry that they are safe on campus. You only have a limited time to manage all their needs," Shelly said.

She trains others to save lives with Automated External Defibrillators (AED). She is also part of a crisis response team that assists with emergencies outside of school.

Rakow says McEvilly is an all-around good person.

"That's Shelly in a nut shell, and I appreciate her," she said.

8 News NOW is rewarding Shelly McEvilly's efforts by awarding her $800 as part of its weekly series Acts of Kindness.
