Advocacy Groups Host 'Day of the River' in Vegas

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Several advocacy groups in Las Vegas are hosting a Spanish community forum focusing on water issues, drought, conservation and the importance of the Colorado River to southern Nevada.

Officials are calling it The Day of the River.

The Nevada Conservation League, the Latin Chamber of Commerce Community Foundation and Nuestro Rio are holding the conference at 11:45 a.m. Wednesday at the Rafael Rivera Community Center on Stewart Avenue east of downtown Las Vegas.

Officials including Clark County Commissioner Lawrence Weekly, Latin Chamber official Rene Cantu and Nevada Colorado River Commission member Marybel Batjer are due to head a discussion about competing demands on the river.

The Lake Mead reservoir behind Hoover Dam on the river supplies 90 percent of the southern Nevada drinking water supply.
