Airman Arrested for Child Abuse of His 3-Month-Old Baby

LAS VEGAS -- A Nellis Air Force Base airman is in custody on charges of child abuse with substantial bodily harm after police say he shook his 3-month-old baby boy.

Andrew Leach was arrested after his baby was taken to Sunrise Hospital on Feb. 2 in critical condition with severe head trauma.

Leach told police that he had dropped the baby while giving him a bath, but the doctor who treated the child told police the injuries were consistent with shaken baby syndrome.

The suspect also told police he suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, alcohol and chemical dependency and depression. He said he had been treated at both in-patient and out-patient programs. He finished his last treatment about a week before the incident.

Leach's wife told police they had had a number of domestic violence incidents. She also told them that he was "rough with the baby." She also said that Child Protective Services had been called by the staff of one psychiatric hospital because he had told them he wanted to hurt his baby.

Leach's next court date is Feb. 20.
