Animal Foundation full, urges postponing pet drop-offs

LAS VEGAS -- The Animal Foundation announced Tuesday morning is at capacity and is urging people in Las Vegas to postpone any pet drop-offs at the shelter until this weekend.

Every day 110 animals are turned into The Animal Foundation because either the owners cannot care for the animal or it a stray.

The agency says its adoption centers and lost and found areas are full.

"Our kennels are full, and we are asking our community, if at all possible, to postpone bringing animals to our facility until this weekend," said Christine Robinson, executive director for The Animal Foundation. "We are doing everything possible to save as many lives as we can, and if you can hold on to any animal you find or wish to surrender for just a few days, it will make a tremendous difference in our efforts to solve this challenge."

The cages are full of mostly Chihuahuas, which are popular in the southwest and pit bulls.

"Breeding in the spring, out roaming in the summer, unwanted litters are brought to us," Andy Bischel of The Animal Foundation said.

The Animal Foundation is a kill-shelter. It said it has not killed to make space in two years. In fact, euthanasia at shelter has reduced by 10,000 over the last four years.

Still, 58 animals are euthanized on average each day and that number could soon be on the rise.

The shelter said, if you find a stray pet follow these steps before bringing in the animal to shelter:

  • Call city or county animal control to report all found animals.
  • Call any phone numbers on the collar, if available.
  • Take the pet to a veterinarian clinic to scan for a microchip.
  • Post fliers and post information online.

The Animal Foundation said it, "will continue to accept animals and will never turn a lost, unwanted or an abandoned animal away."
