Arson Suspect: 'I Had Nothing To Do With It'

LAS VEGAS -- Police said an extreme case of domestic violence could lead to 15 counts of attempted murder.

Metro Police said Salvador Hernandez set fire to the Sonoma Shadows Apartments on Sunday and the victim in the case said this isn't the first time he's been violent.

Fenced off and boarded up, residents provided homemade video of the charred shell of the building that went up in flames on Sunday.

Investigators said the fire was about a relationship that went bad.

There was violence that led up to the fire according to court paperwork. The victim told Metro Police Salvador Hernandez repeatedly called her from a blocked number. The victim told investigators Hernandez even broke into her apartment two weeks ago with an ax.

On the morning of the fire, the victim said he came back knocking on the door and then set the place on fire.

The victim and her 16-year-old son barely escaped with their lives.

"That it was arson, it really makes us uneasy, especially hearing that something happened previously and how was he allowed back on the property," one resident said.

Licensed therapist Donna Wilburn said in domestic violence cases, signs of violence cannot be ignored.

"When someone is so afraid of losing their spouse or partner, so intensely afraid of that relationship ending, they can be in such an emotional state that they are not logical or rational," Wilburn said. "It's important more to prevent the argument or the relationship from getting to that point because once it has gotten to that point it's just out of control."

When questioned by investigators, documents show Salvador said he had nothing to do with the fire explaining "if someone dies in the fire, God help me."

It's unclear if there was a protection order in this case for the intended victim.

If a victim had been granted an order, they can be given protection up to one year and if the suspect violates the order the person can be arrested on the spot.
