Aunt says nephew died trying to save her and family

LAS VEGAS - A homicide Wednesday morning was Metro Police's 82nd murder investigation of the year.

Early Wednesday morning, a Spring Valley man was shot and killed in the driveway of his home near Russell and Lindell.  Family members say the man is 24-year-old Gabriel Valenzuela.

On Thursday, a mid-morning phone call came into Channel 8 from Lily Jano. She didn't want her face shown, or her voice recorded, but she desperately wanted to tell her story, along with the story of her nephew, Gabriel Valenzuela.

Over the course of an hour and 10 minutes, Jano described Valenzuela who was a 24-year-old nursing student at the College of Southern Nevada. Jano said Valenzuela, a former honor student from Durango High School, was entering his final semester.

Jano said her nephew was a simple man, a smart man, and helpful.

Metro Police says four suspects in dark hooded sweatshirts shot Valenzuela in his driveway Wednesday morning while he was getting the mail.  The killers are still on the loose.

Jano says she was inside with the rest of the family when the shots were fired.  She believes Valenzuela died protecting them.  She said, "He did not want us to suffer."

According to Jano, the incident has made her want to buy a gun.  But more importantly, she wants justice.

"They tried to take all of us," she added, "He died to save us."

Metro police say Valenzuela did not have any criminal ties. Detectives believe the suspects were planning to break into the home.
