Bellagio robbery suspect laughs in federal court

LAS VEGAS -- The suspect in the robberies of the Bellagio casino and a bank appeared in U.S. Federal Court Thursday in a wheelchair.

Scott Carmitchell, 34, was scheduled for an arraignment and to enter a plea. He was shackled and wearing a mask when he entered the court room.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Nancy Koppe entered a not guilty plea on his behalf because he was non-responsive with the exception of occasionally laughing when the judge spoke.

Carmitchell has been in U.S. Marshal's custody. He will be transferred to a Bureau of Prisons facility where he will undergo a psychiatric evaluation that was previously ordered.

The evaluation will determine if he is competent to stand trial.

A trial date has been set for Sept. 29.
