Bigger police presence for fight weekend

LAS VEGAS - From the New Year's Eve celebration to NASCAR races, Las Vegas plays host to big events several times a year. Sgt. Jeff Clark is with Metro Police. Clark says, "this is something we're used to doing and this fight is no different."

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department says they're gearing up for the big fight but it's nothing the only thing they'll be monitoring this weekend. Clark says, "we're staffing over 100 different events, not just the fight and so after parties associated with the fight. We also have things in town like the MTV Music awards, the Big 3 Basketball Tournament. You will notice a very visible police presence down in our resort corridor. We are shifting on-duty resources to cover our resort corridor, The Strip and downtown Fremont Street."

For officers working on their normal days off, they'll be paid special events overtime. Clark says, "those officers are paid for by the venue, it doesn't come out of our budget or taxpayer fund."

Metro wants to reinforce the fact that residents will not be losing any of their protection. Clark says, "it''s important for citizens of Las Vegas to know that coverage of the neighborhood will not be affected. We still have the cops that will be in the neighborhood as well."
