Bill regulating edible marijuana passes legislative hurdle

CARSON CITY, Nev. - A bill regulating edible marijuana products has cleared a key hurdle. Senate Bill 344 restricts packaging, shapes, and advertisement of pot food products.

The assembly committee passage Friday pretty much assures the bill will go to Governor Sandoval's desk.

The measure is  moving along with broad support but would have died if it didn't make it out of committee by Friday's deadline.

The bill would require edibles to be sold in single-serving and nondescript packaging. SB 344 also requires child-proof packaging.

Baked items must also be in non-transparent packaging.

Bill co-sponsor, Senator Patricia Farley, says the idea is to try to cut off problems before they start in what is still a controversial industry.

"These foods are, can be, appealing to children, and also unbeknownst to an adult who does not know they're infused, they can be eaten and consumed, so we have to do everything that we can to make sure protecting children first and foremost, and then second make sure we're educating the public about these items," said Senator Patricia Farley, Clark County.

Lawmakers have been scrambling to pass regulations ahead of the July 1 target start date for recreational marijuana sales.

However, many of the other bills related to pot are considered exempt. That means they are discussed at the end of the session while lawmakers work through the budget.

Most of the remaining bills have to do with the tax structure for both medical and recreational weed.
