Brazyl Ward beats odds, makes cheerleading squad

LAS VEGAS - The remarkable recovery of Brazyl Ward has hit a new high.

The now 10-year-old was badly injured in a hit-and-run crash on Halloween night almost four years ago.

Doctors gave Brazyl little hope that she would ever walk again. But not only is she walking on her own, she made the cheerleading squad at her school this year.

And for the Ward family, Halloween is not a scary day. Instead, they're turning a negative experience from four years ago, into a positive one by spreading a message of safety awareness.

Brazyl Ward ditches her wheelchair for cheer practice. In fact, she rarely uses it anymore. She has come a long way since being struck by a car while trick-or-treating on Halloween 2013. Her parents were told she wouldn't make it through the night.

"When the accident happened, I didn't think that these days would come so I just embrace every single moment that she's able to smile and be happy, Brazyl's mother Tiffany Ward said.

Brazyl is still doing occupational therapy twice a week. Cheerleading is just another way to keep her moving and inspired.

"I'm so, so excited to cheer," Brazyl Ward said.

"She just wants to make sure that she lives out her kid life and I, I love it. I love everything she's doing. I'm proud of her," Tiffany Ward said.

In the years following the hit-and-run, the Ward family has stayed active in the community raising safety awareness in the weeks leading up to Oct. 31.

Over the weekend, they hosted a Halloween Safetacular event for families.

"That's what gives us the, the happiness to where we can actually celebrate instead of mourn because there's nothing to mourn about, cause she's here and she's happy and she's thriving," Tiffany Ward said.

Thriving and beating the odds. And even when she falls, with a little cheer and a fighting spirit, she keeps going.

Brazyl continues to make progress in her recovery. Not long ago, she started regaining some movement in her right arm.

Nothing is slowing her down. Her mother says she will also be joining student government at her school.
