Bunkerville standoff defendant testifies in federal trial

LAS VEGAS - There have been fireworks during the retrial of four men accused of using assault-style weapons against federal officials attempting to round up cattle owned by rancher Cliven Bundy.

Defendant O. Scott Drexler testified Monday about the standoff at Bunkerville in April 2014.  Drexler testified that he made the trip from Idaho to protest.

Drexler who is being tried for conspiracy said he knelt down with his weapon so that he could disappear, and prevent himself from looking threatening.  But, a Clark County prosecutor tried tearing Drexler's testimony a part, even showing a picture of Drexler with his weapon pointed in the direction of law enforcement officers.

The prosecutor also brought up statements Drexler made four months after the standoff to a fake film crew which turned out to be undercover FBI agents.

The standoff at Bunkerville occurred after Bundy called in reinforcement when the court ordered the seizure of his cattle which was illegally grazing on public land.

When Bundy's supporters arrived, they outnumbered law enforcement officers.  Eventually, the Bureau of Land Management backed down and released Bundy's cattle.  Drexler first trial was a mistrial.

Drexler was the second defendant in the trial to testify. The first defendant's testimony was cut short after restrictions were placed on what he could testify about.  The judge said he did not comply.

The men had about 70 people supporting them inside the courtroom. Some drove from out of state to be there.

Closing statements in the trial are set for Tuesday at 10 a.m.
