Cancer Institute to Close By End of January

LAS VEGAS -- The Nevada Cancer Institute is expected to stop treating patients by Jan. 31, 2013, the institute's owner, University of California, San Diego Health System announced Wednesday.

Current patients will receive notification by mail and information on how to find a new oncology care provider, according to a statement by the university.

"When UC San Diego Health System purchased NVCI out of bankruptcy, its goal was to revitalize and expand the institute's oncology practice," said Dr. Tom McAfee, dean of clinical affairs, UC San Diego Health System. "To succeed, our team determined that we needed to partner with community oncologists to attract local patients and to ensure optimal access to the world-class NVCI facilities."

The university bought the institute earlier this year. Nevada Cancer Institute opened seven years ago.

In the statement released by the institute, Universal Health Services, which holds the institute's building lease, invoked a real estate clause that prevented private physicians from practicing at the institute.

The institute is housed in a 175,000-square-foot facility in on 1 Breakthrough Way in Summerlin.

"Without partners with whom to collaborate in Nevada, UC San Diego Health System cannot sustain adequate patient volumes in Las Vegas, and therefore must close the NVCI practice," the statement said.

The institute has 75 employees who have been notified of the pending closure and are eligible for a three month severance package.

McAfee said UC Davis will continue took for partners to restore clinical care at the institute.

Current patients who need assistance in identifying a new oncology provider may call NVCI at 702-822-5433 or call the Clark County resource center at 702-455-4270 for a list of local cancer care providers.
