Carpenter Canyon Wildfire Burns 1,100 Acres

PAHRUMP, Nev. -- The U.S. Forest Service said a wildfire burning in Carpenter Canyon near Pahrump has burned 1,100 acres instead of 1,800 which was initially reported.

Forest Service officials said they have more accurate information than they did earlier.

Carpenter Canyon sits in an area of Mt. Charleston. Forest Service officials plan to replace crews currently fighting the blaze with a new team of firefighters on Thursday.

According to the BLM, the fire started Monday when lightning hit a tree. The fire is being fueled by pinyon juniper trees.

Four engines, a single-engine air tanker dropping fire retardant, and a helicopter is being used to fight the fire. The Forest Service's most advanced ground crew is fighting the fire. More resources are expected Wednesday.

BLM spokeswoman Hilarie Patton said Trout Canyon Road is expected to close. The town of Trout Canyon is about two miles away from the fire, she said. No structures are threatened at this time.

Patton said fire restrictions are in place on public lands. She said fireworks are not permitted, including the safe-and-sane varieties. Smoking is not allowed on public lands, and campfires may only be started in designated area.

She added anything that creates a spark is not allowed.

The American Red Cross Chapter of Southern Nevada is preparing shelter supplies and volunteers for Pahrump in case the wildfire requires a shelter opening.
