Carpenter Fire Burns 6 Structures, Grows to 25,000 Acres

MOUNT CHARLESTON, Nev. -- The Carpenter 1 fire burning on Mount Charleston has consumed 25,524 acres and six structures, wildfire fire officials said.

The structures were in the Prospect Ranch area, several miles from where most of the Mount Charleston homes are located. The fire has been burning for nine days and displaced 500 people who live on the mountain.

There are more than 1,000 firefighters working the blaze which covers nearly 40 square miles. The fire is 15 percent contained, up 5 percent from the previous day.

The fire lines protecting homes in the Rainbow subdivision appear to be holding strong. Incident management officials at the command center said fighting a fire is like playing a chess match and firefighters battle difficult terrain and wind.

"There are big concerns with the fact it's at the mouth of Kyle Canyon and it could turn if the winds shift on us. It could turn and go up the canyon which would not be good," said Madonna Lengrich, public information officer for Carpenter 1 Fire.

Firefighters have made good progress and are still working on the fire that crossed Kyle Canyon Road Tuesday. State Route 157 is the main road in and out of Kyle Canyon and provides the best access for firefighters.

The Incident Management Team is hoping to increase its fire fighting ability by bringing in a retardant mixing station. It would allow helicopters to quickly scoop up the retardant and drop it into more remote areas.

The cost of fighting the fire is nearing $6 million.
