Carson City Schools Awarded Race to the Top Grant

CARSON CITY (AP) -- The Carson City School District has been selected as one of 16 winners nationwide to receive a Race to the Top education grant.

Nevada U.S. Sen. Harry Reid announced Carson City's award early Tuesday, saying the district is in line to receive about $10 million.

Carson City was chosen by the U.S. Department of Education as a finalist for the competitive grant last month. It was the only school district in Nevada to advance as a finalist from 362 applications nationwide. The school districts in Clark County and Washoe County both applied, but were eliminated in the initial round of competition.

The district in Nevada's capital city serves 7,100 students. Officials say its grant proposal includes hiring 10 teacher/trainers and developing a data system to allow parents to monitor student progress.
