Cat cafe craze coming to Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS - Cat cafes, it seems to be all the craze and now the feline frenzy is making its way to the Las Vegas valley.

Cat cafes first opened in Japan and Taiwan. They are known to be locations where people  can watch and play with cats.

The first cat cafe opened in 2014 in Oakland, California. Since then, about 30 similar establishments have appeared in the country from Seattle to Washington, D.C.

Rhiannon Gladney has been raising money and organizing pop-up adoption events in an effort to open a cat cafe in Las Vegas called Meow or Never.

Gladney, a cat person at heart, remembers attending her first cat cafe a couple years ago in Portland. The UNLV graduate fell in love with the idea.

Volunteering for the animal rescue community, she soon discovered there are thousands of cats in need of a loving home.

"So, we have about 200,000 cats looking for homes right now in the Las Vegas valley," Gladney says.

She hopes her cat cafe Meow or Never will operate as a cat rescue and coffee shop.

"Cat cafes are really awesome because the cats get to show off their personalities," Gladney says. "They are really comfortable. They are in a room, they have tons of places to play and because they are so comfortable, they are a lot more social and they are also being more social all day everyday."

Gladney says cats can help people emotionally.

"I had a cat since I was eight and her name was Luna. She was my best friend. She slept with me every night for like 17 years. She recently passed, but that cat has gotten me through some of the worst points in my life and I would like more people to have a relationship like that."

Gladney started raising funds three months ago. She has raised $8,000. Her goal is $50,000. As far as a location, she is looking at Spring Valley, Summerlin, or the Arts District.

She says, it will be the first cafe to run on donations.

So, instead of charging visitors for their coffee, they can genuinely help the cats by giving them a forever home.

Another pop up event will take place on Feb. 10 at Hearts Alive for anyone who wishes to join the meow-ing cause.
