CCSD Changes School Start Times, Cuts 200 Bus Driver Positions

LAS VEGAS -- The Clark County School District is announcing that it is changing the school start time for 139 schools next year in order to save $10 million in transportation costs.

The start time change will result in the elimination of 200 bus driver positions. Currently, there are 75 vacant positions that will not filled and another 125 positions where the drivers face losing their job.

The district says the $10 million that will be saved amounts to 143 teaching positions that will not have to be cut as the district face more than $400 million in proposed cuts.

"These are very difficult times and everyone must work together and share in the sacrifice as we try to save money," said Dr. Lauren Kohut-Rost, CCSD.

Of the 139 schools with changing bell times, 70 school will see a change of more than 30 minutes. The district says the cuts will not impact the two-mile walking radius in order to qualify for transportation and students of different school levels will not be riding together.
