CCSD holds orientation for new teachers, still short educators

LAS VEGAS -- The first day of school for the Clark County School District is now fewer than two weeks away.

The Clark County School District says it likely will not be able to fill hundreds of vacancies for full-time teachers by the first day of class.

CCSD is working to make sure current teachers, especially the newest hires, are qualified. The district held a new teacher orientation Wednesday at The Venetian hotel-casino for some 1,200 brand-new teachers.

"We are at a place where we are making a difference with students," Superintendent Pat Skorkowsky said.

Skorkowsky told his newest hires to do all they can to push students to succeed.

CCSD is still short about 600 full-time teachers but efforts are underway to hire as many as possible before the first day of school.

"Principals have hired about 100 teachers already in the last week and in the last three days, it has been about 50," Staci Vesneske with CCSD said.

Vesneske says a nationwide teachers shortage has made recruit efforts difficult. The district will have to rely on close to 400 long-term substitutes to fill classrooms for now.

The goal is to get these instructors certified to be full-time teachers.

"These are people who are going to be learning, yes, but people who had success in the past," Vesneske said.

People like Brianna Collmar who has been substituting in Clark County for the past year. She says she will continue to do so until she gets licensed.

"I want to be an elementary school teacher, eventually with a master's degree. I want to retire in that field," Collmar said.

For the first time in many years, CCSD has hired more new teachers from Nevada than from other states.

Skorkowsky says the focus now is to give as much support and resources as possible to all teachers so that students can succeed.

"On that first day of school, just remember they are going to show up whether you are ready or not, so you better be ready," Skorkowsky said.

Aside from teachers, CCSD is also looking to fill more than 100 bus driver positions.
