CCSD releases names of 14 new candidates added to superintendent search

LAS VEGAS - The list of superintendent candidates for the Clark County School District got a little longer Monday when the board released the names of 14 people vying for the job.

Last week, trustees voted to expand their search to specifically include applicants with ties to the school district.  All of the candidates are either current or former CCSD employees.

"It has to be within because we have a beautiful community here in Las Vegas," said Marie Roccia, grandmother.

"I think someone within the school, in the district," said Ruby Rhodes, a local grandmother.

The candidates' names are listed on the agenda for Thursday's board meeting.

The candidates are as followed:

  • Mike Barton, Ed. D., chief academic officer
  • Cody. O. Claver, a former teacher
  • Mark Coleman, a former deputy director for the Clark County Assoc. of School Administrators
  • Jhone M. Ebert, a former chief technology officer
  • Robert A. Gerye, a former principal
  • Deborah Gruner, a former substitute principal
  • John S. Haynal, a "franchise" principal
  • Mollie Ann Holt, a former substitute teacher, and support staff
  • Timothy S. Hughes, a former teacher
  • April Lealia Key, Ed.S., an assistant superintendent
  • Antonio Rael, a school associate superintendent
  • Michele Robinson, Ed.D., a former teacher
  • Jesse Welsh, Ed.D., an assistant superintendent
  • Eva M. White, Ed.D, a former assistant superintendent

At Thursday's meeting on April 19, trustees will begin the process of narrowing down the candidate list.

They are not specifying how many internal finalists they're looking for, only saying "one or more" will interview for the job on April 27.  On that same day, trustees will also interview three out-of-state candidates originally selected.

"I want somebody that would be looking at the children and not at anything else," Roccia said.

"I would like to see someone who's interested in getting schools more money," said Rhodes.

Trustees hired Ray and Associates to help find a new superintendent.  The firm initially selected four finalists, but none were locals.

Last week, one of the candidates dropped out after trustees voted to expand their search to include current and former CCSD applicants.

There are three external candidates:

  • Donald T. Haddad, Ed. D., superintendent of St. Vrain Valley Schools in Longmont, Colorado
  • Shonda Huery Hardman, Ed. D, coach, consultant, urban specialist, Franklin Covey
  • Jesus Jara, Ed.D, deputy superintendent of Orange County Public Schools in Florida

"So I'm going to be reading about these superintendents and see who is in that way for me," Roccia said.

Sitting superintendent Pat Skorkowsky is retiring in June.  Trustees are scheduled to hire a new superintendent by May 2.
