City of Las Vegas hosts job fair for military veterans

LAS VEGAS - The City of Las Vegas is working to put military veterans back to work. The city is hosting a job fair Thursday.

Forty five employers will be on hand to take applications from unemployed veterans.

The Las Vegas Urban League Veterans Employment and Training Services Center is participating in the job fair.

The center exclusively helps veterans find work thanks, in part, to an $800,000 grant from the state. The center trains veterans for intensive case management and resume writing, and provides assessments to identify job possibilities.

Center representatives say they have helped 128 veterans so far.

Program manager Tamra Collins says they are seeing a large number of post-9/11 veterans coming to the center.

"They're younger in age, and they have not necessarily gotten a lot of the work life experiences in place," she said. "Yet, they come here, and then they begin to compete for work opportunities along with a lot of the other Clark County residents."

The City of Las Vegas job fair takes place Thursday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the East Las Vegas Community Center at 250 N. Eastern Avenue. For more information, call 702-229-6315.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor Statistics, 235,000 veterans live in southern Nevada.
