City, Transportation Officials to Launch Bus Stop Safety Effort

LAS VEGAS - The City of Las Vegas and the Regional Transportation Commission are announcing a $1 million effort to improve bus stop safety.

A tragic bus stop accident in September 2012 prompted the city and RTC to look at the problem. Gary Hosey, Jr. crashed his car into a bus stop near Spring Mountain Boulevard and Decatur Road – killing four people and injuring several others. Police say the 23-year-old was drunk at the time. His trial is expected to start in April.

City and RTC officials want to move every bus stop in Las Vegas five feet farther away from streets. While they feel the move will improve safety, one RTC official admits it likely would not have helped save lives in the September crash.

"The rate of speed that the vehicle was moving, it was airborne when it hit that bus shelter," said Carl Scarborough with the RTC. "Even if that bus shelter had been behind the sidewalk, it wouldn't have made any difference."

RTC officials expect the change in distance will prevent 90 percent of crashes at bus stops. The $1 million will pay land owners for easements at as many as 200 locations. Transportation officials plan to start moving bus stops that see the most riders.

There are approximately 3,400 bus stops around the city. Once the $1 million is exhausted, Las Vegas will need to rely on federal grants to pay for any additional easements and/or construction.
