Clark County Officials Stress Fire Safety

LAS VEGAS --  The Junior Grizzlies football team is putting in work at the park. They hope to make it to a football tournament in California and that means firing up the grill and selling plates of food.

Kiley Fuller said while they fundraise this holiday weekend they are also thinking about safety.

"We make sure everything is turned off, make sure the kids are away for it, said Fuller.

Before you start up the pit Tim Szymanski with Las Vegas Fire and Rescue said there are some things you'll need to remember.

First, keep the grills at least 10 feet from your home or apartment. If you live in a complex, remember pits aren't allowed past the ground level. Once you spark up the grill, Szymanski says keep an eye on your kids.

That's something Christopher Kennard said he's definitely thinking about this weekend.

"When the wind is blowing one way you want to keep the kids in the other direction because the fire has a tendency of jumping," said Kennard.

Kennard isn't using lighter fluid to get his fire started, but if you are, Szymanski said you need to be at least an arms length away. When you're ready to put out the flames remember to check that the fire is out and the pit has cooled off before you wrap up and walk away.
